   Section I: Introduction and Overview

Income information is essential to the PSID. Since the very
beginning of the study, the yearly family files have
contained a lot of data about income from work, from assets,
and from many sources of transfers. Over the course of the
study, more and more details about income have been added to
the final datasets, particularly for transfer income.

For example, in the first year of the study we asked about
eight separate forms of transfer income but coded and
released only bracketed amounts for each type, with a field
amount for total transfers. Beginning in the second and
third waves, we coded the actual annual amount received in
each of the eight transfer categories. In 1975, a new kind
of transfer, Supplemental Security Income, was added to the
list. From 1977 onward we separated alimony from child
support and unemployment compensation from workers'
compensation, increasing the total number of separate
transfer income categories to eleven. Starting in 1984, we
added variables about the months in which specific incomes
were received and coded separately for Head and Wife/"Wife"
   the amounts received by each.

Incomes of Heads and Wives/"Wives" were released with the
greatest amount of detail. Incomes of other Family Unit
members (OFUMs), all those individuals associated with
response families in a given year but who were not the
current Head/Wife/"Wife" in that year, were released in
   lesser detail.

Transfer incomes of OFUMs are available on the single-year
family files in summary form, the amounts representing the
collective receipt of each of the eleven types of transfer
across all OFUMs in the family. From 1980 onward, taxable
incomes could be more easily related to individuals, as
identifiers were included on the family file for up to five
   OFUMs.

On the individual files, various summaries of income have
been used through the years, ranging from a simple total of
each individual's income from all sources in the early waves
of the study through separate totals for each individual's
taxable and transfer incomes in more recent waves.
Variables for type of income received were initiated in the
first wave and refined over the course of the study. For
taxable incomes, the type variable indicated whether an
individual's taxable amount represented labor, asset or a
combination of labor and asset income (e.g., 1992 V30704).
But for the few OFUMs who received taxable income from both
earnings and assets, it was impossible to divide the taxable
total into separate labor and asset portions. This meant
that, for example, users were unable to calculate wage rates
   for these persons.

Similarly, although the codes for the variable indicating
the type of transfer income (e.g., 1992 V30711) included
separate categories for each of the eleven recognized
transfer types, a code simply indicating multiple sources of
transfers was used for those who received more than one
sort. Again, although most OFUMs did not receive more than
one type of transfer, users who wished to target, for
example, daughters receiving ADC could not be sure that all
such cases were included in an analysis.

Through the 1992 wave, all of the raw data were coded by
members of the SRC Coding Section from paper questionnaires
after undergoing inspection and cleaning of all items. (For
details about the family composition and economic editing
processes, refer to Parts 3 and 4 in Section I of each
wave's main documentation.) Because of the huge amount of
other data to be coded, the smaller payoff of coding values
for every type of income for OFUMs, and file size
constraints, the OFUM income data were never coded item by
   item for each person.

Beginning in 1993, the questionnaire was converted to a
computer application. With our move to CAI, data are
already coded, at least in raw form, each year by the
interviewer, thus eliminating the burden of hand coding each
and every item. We have decided to take advantage of this
windfall and release it for use by those analysts who wish
to use the gory detail. The new data are probably more
useful for tracking recipiency of transfers such as ADC,
SSI, other welfare, Social Security and pensions than they
are for earnings. Consistent with past data collection
efforts, we include earnings and work information for each
individual but not occupation and other job-related detail.
However, we do include data about the specific months in
   which income was received.

The main family and individual files in 1993 include
somewhat less income detail about OFUMs than in the past.
Unlike the 1992 and earlier family files, the 1993 family
file does not include separate taxable amounts for up to
five earners, although the sum of all OFUMs' taxable income
is still present. The portion of the main individual file
that contains 1993 data has three income variables: one for
labor income, one for asset income, and one for total
transfer income of each person. It does not contain the
type variables for taxable and transfer incomes reported in
   1993.

These lacks are more than compensated for with the 1993 OFUM
Income Detail File. For each OFUM, it contains separate
sets of variables for labor income from up to four jobs; two
types of asset income, interest and other assets; and the
eleven types of transfer income recognized by the PSID.

Individuals For Whom the Data are Available

The OFUM Income Detail file contains one record for each
person associated with a 1993 response family unit if that
person was neither the current Head nor the current
Wife/"Wife" in 1993. Records for Heads, Wives and "Wives"
are not included on this file, as similarly detailed income
data for them are part of the 1993 family file, in keeping
   with past custom.

A cautionary note: the OFUM Income Detail File contains two
records for some OFUMs. These individuals moved from one
PSID family to another. They have one record relating to
the 1993 family out of which they moved and another record
for the 1993 family into which they moved. For more
information about these persons, see Section IV, Part D.

Section II: Questionnaire Detail and Data Editing

Two general question sequences were asked about OFUM incomes
in 1993, depending on the age of the individual. Incomes
for each OFUM aged 16 and above consist of information about
a maximum of four jobs, interest income, and the eleven
types of transfers recognized by the PSID. This information
   is collected in questions G76-G84mm.

Possible income sources for OFUMs aged 15 or younger, asked
in questions G92-G94ff, are much fewer; many of the PSID
income categories are inapplicable to them, e.g.,
unemployment compensation. The younger OFUM sequence
collects data about work, interest income, SSI receipt,
welfare, Social Security and other income.

Social Security information was also asked for all family
members in questions G31-G36b, leading to some duplication
of reports when amounts were mentioned in the special OFUM
question sequences as well as this one. It is surprising,
however, that quite a number of cases did not contain the
Social Security report in the all-family-member sequence but
   instead in the OFUM sequences.

In addition to the Social Security cleanup implied in the
preceding paragraph, editing of OFUM income included
attempts to correctly assign income to the proper persons
and to correctly assign incomes to their proper categories.

Reports of Social Security, ADC/AFDC and welfare income
receipt by OFUMs under age 18 required scrutiny, as most of
this was in reality received by an older individual on
behalf of the OFUM and may have been reported elsewhere as
well. Reports of work income by OFUMs under age 15 were
inspected to eliminate allowances given by parents, as these
are intra-family income transfers and are not additional
   components of family income.

The miscellaneous income questions for both age groups were
examined to determine whether incomes reported therein might
be better classified elsewhere. Amounts were moved to
appropriate categories when interviewer notes so indicated.

Section III: Structure of the File

   Part A: Details About Cases

The OFUM Income Detail File contains 14,857 records, one for
each person associated with the family who was not the 1993
Head or Wife/"Wife". Even if an individual received no
income, as indeed most OFUMs do not, he or she has a record
   on this file.

The file is sorted by 1993 Interview Number (V1) and within
that by 1993 Sequence Number (V2).

   Part B: Sets of Variables

As described in Section II, separate income question
sequences were asked about OFUMs depending on their ages.
Although the sequences are different for the two groups of
OFUMs, each income category on this file contains
information for OFUMs of all ages in one set of variables,
that is to say, younger OFUMs' work, interest, SSI, etc. are
included in the same variables as those for older OFUMs.

Separate sets of variables exist for each category of
income; for the older OFUMs, the four job-related sets are
kept separate from each other. Younger OFUMs' job
information is included in the first set of job variables.

Information about each income type is included in a set of,
minimally, seventeen variables. Each set includes the
following raw data in fourteen variables: the reported
amount; the time unit of its receipt, for example, per month
or per week; and twelve separate variables, one for each
month of 1992, that indicate whether or not the income was
received in the specified month. The reported amounts, time
units and month indicator variables may have missing data.
With each of the job-related income variable sets, four more
variables, reported weeks worked, reported hours per week
worked, and an accuracy variable for each, are also
included. The weeks and hours per week variables have
undergone imputation procedures but have not been prorated.

We generate an additional three variables for each income
type. The first is an annualized version of the specific
income, imputed if any of the reported components contain
missing data, and also prorated for the portion of the year
that the income was received while the individual was
resident in the PSID family. The remaining two are the
proration factor used, as well as an accuracy code
indicating whether imputation was necessary. If an income
is job-related, we also create prorated annual work hours.

Because of proration, it is possible that an annualized
amount is zero while its reported components are not. This
occurs if all of the income of a specific type was received
before or after the period during which the individual was
   living in the family.

Section IV below describes our imputation and proration
procedures and concepts in fuller detail.

Section IV: Imputations, Prorating, and Other Cautions

   Part A: Imputations

Beginning in 1993, the PSID changed the way in which missing
data were imputed. See Section I, Part 3 of the main Guide
for 1993 for more general information and history about
imputations, but briefly, hot-deck procedures were used for
   OFUM income and work.
Data collected for most dollar values consisted of an
amount, a time unit variable, and a series of twelve monthly
indicators. These latter are dummy variables indicating
whether or not that item was received during the specified
month. Amounts were annualized from the components as
follows, assuming none of the fourteen component variables
   were missing.

   * If the time unit was yearly, then the given amount was
   used as is.

   * If the time unit was monthly, then the given amount was
multiplied by the number of months in which receipt was
   indicated.

   * If the time unit was weekly, then the given amount was
multiplied by the number of months in which receipt was
   indicated times 4.33.

   * If the time unit was biweekly, then the given amount was
multiplied by the number of months in which receipt was
   indicated times 2.17.

   * Hourly amounts were given only for labor income; these
were multiplied by the number of hours (which may have
   been imputed).

Missing information on any one of the fourteen component
variables (the amount, the time unit, or one or more of the
month indicators) caused an imputation to occur. To aid the
analyst in deciding whether to use our imputations or to
create his or her own, we include the reported amount, the
time unit, and the twelve monthly variables along with our
annualized amount and accuracy code for each reported item.
Each OFUM's income and work hours amounts are prorated for
the amount received while the OFUM was living in the family.
OFUM income questions were asked in two groups, one set for
persons aged 16 and older and another, smaller set for those
   under age 16.

The labor data for the "older" OFUMs consisted of as many as
four reports of jobs. Missing information was imputed for
each of these jobs. The procedure for work weeks used the
set of twelve monthly variables; each month worked was
counted as 4.33 weeks. If all the months were NA, then 26
weeks of work were assigned. Missing hours were hot-decked
from among those with nonmissing reports for the job
mention. Total annual hours were inspected for cases
reporting more than 5,840 hours per year, the PSID maximum
allowable; a half dozen were found (most had more than one
job with missing information) and adjusted downward by hand.
Incomes of all types were hot-decked within income
   categories if missing.

Procedures for the "young" OFUMs were somewhat different.
Unfortunately, data collection did not include month-of-
receipt questions. Thus, all amounts not reported as annual
received accuracy codes of 1, with the exception of labor
income; it could sometimes be annualized using the weeks and
   hours variables.

Missing weekly work hours were simply hot-decked. Missing
work weeks were imputed from the unweighted mean (18.9
weeks) for those young OFUMs who worked in the prior year.
Using the same assignment of 26 weeks as for older OFUMs
with missing months produced unbelievably high work hours
because some PSID children work a lot during the summer,
thus increasing the likelihood of higher weekly hours being
assigned to those with both weeks and hours missing.
Similarly, the median of 52 weeks for young OFUMs wasn't
feasible because quite a few youngsters have paper routes--
but their reported weekly commitment is 10 hours.

Young OFUMs' missing asset and transfer incomes were hot-
   decked.

   Part B: Prorating Income

As mentioned above, income received by an OFUM is only
counted for the portion of the year that he or she was a
member of a PSID family unit because we wish to match prior
calendar year income with the family's needs during that
   same time period.

Proration factors were calculated for each type of income
reported, as each could have been received in a different
portion of the year. Proration factors compared the months
in which an income was received with the months in which an
individual lived in the family. A person is considered to
have moved on the first day of the month coded on his or her
individual data record as the move-in or move-out month.
Those with missing move dates are assumed to be in the
family for half of the year, that is, July 1. Those who
"appeared" or "disappeared" (i.e., whose moves occurred
before the prior wave but were not discovered until the
   present wave--the moved in/out indicator [1993: V30813]
equals 2 or 8) were treated as present for all or none of
the year, respectively. Individuals in splitoff families
are assumed to be present for the entire year.

Thus, those who were present throughout 1992 received a
proration factor of 1 for each income; those who had moved
out in January 1992 received a proration factor of 0.

Since young OFUMs, who were asked a separate set of income
questions, had no months variables indicating income
receipt, we assumed their incomes were received evenly
throughout the year; amounts for movers were prorated simply
by the fraction of time in which they lived in the family.

Month-by-month receipt of each type of income for an older
OFUM who was present for only part of the year was compared
with that person's move date to determine the correct
fraction of FU-worthy income. For example, if a son worked
from July through December but moved out in June, none of
that labor income was counted; whereas, if he had worked
only from January until June, all of his income would have
   been counted.

If months of income receipt were missing, then the income
was assumed to be received evenly across the year for
   proration purposes.

The dates of move out for deceased persons may or may not be
the death dates. These are the dates on which they left the
FU; there may have been some time spent living outside the
FU before death occurred. In general, deceased persons'
incomes are prorated as for other movers, but an exception
was made for their pensions and Social Security income; if
these were received in the same month as the move out, that
   month's amount was retained.

   Part C: Splitting Business Income

Very rarely, an OFUM owns an unincorporated business. For
the few who do, the business income is split into labor and
asset portions in accordance with PSID rules for Heads and
   Wives/"Wives".

If the business showed a profit, this income was split with
half designated as labor and half as asset. Only the labor
portion is included in one of the four sets of job-related
variables, V3-V90. The asset portion and all business
losses are included in the series of variables for assets
   excluding interest, V108-V124.

Part D: Duplicate Records for an Individual (Duplicate Movers Out)

Individuals who move from one family to another require
special treatment in the PSID. This is best explained by a
brief description of data collection methods. When the PSID
goes into the field to begin a new wave of interviewing,
interviewers are supplied with rosters of individuals
associated with the prior year's families. One of the
initial steps in the interviewing process is to update and
correct this list to reflect a family's current situation.
Individuals who were not prelisted but are now present in
the family ("movers in") are added to the list, those who
were prelisted but are no longer present ("movers out") are
marked as having moved out, and relationships to Head of all
family members are adjusted as and if necessary.

The initial listing for a splitoff, or "new" family, which
is generated in the field from information gathered during
the interview with the main family, consists of those
individuals who moved out together from the reinterviewed
family to form a new group. The interviewer is free to add
new individuals to this list and to adjust relationships
where appropriate. All individuals in a splitoff family are
considered to be movers in, since the family itself is new.

Individuals who have moved from one family to another may
have moved into an already-extant family or may have helped
form a splitoff family. The relevant difference between
existing and splitoff families concerns income proration:
Income for those persons moving into extant, or reinterview,
families is only counted for the portion of the year that
the individual was living with that family, whereas the
entire prior year's income is counted for individuals in
splitoff families, regardless of the actual date of move.

In either scenario, a person who moves between families has
two single-year data records for the current year, one as a
mover out and one as a mover in.

The structure of the cross-year individual file, that of one
cross-year record per person ever in the PSID, permits the
incorporation of only one of these single-year records for
the merge. The more desirable record is, of course, the one
describing the individual's current circumstances, his or
her mover-in record, but the mover "loses" the income and
work report about him or her by the family out of which he
   or she moved.

Such an individual can be identified on the Cross-year
Individual File as follows: he or she was living in a PSID
family in 1992 (1992 Sequence Number, V30734, is in the
range 1-20), was also in a 1993 PSID family (1993 Sequence
Number, V30807, is in the range 01-20), but his or her 1993
moved in/out indicator, V30813, has a value of 1, indicating
   a move into another family.

   Section V: Linking Records

To link the records in the 1993 OFUM Income Detail File with
corresponding records in the 1968-1993 Cross-year Individual
File, match the 1993 Interview Number and 1993 Sequence
Number from each. These identifiers will remain stable for
1993 data into the indefinite future, whereas the other
primary identifiers for the Cross-year Individual file, 1968
Interview Number (V30001) and Person Number (V30002)can
occasionally change because of corrections. The duplicate
mover-out records do not match any record in the Cross-year
Individual File. If the duplicate mover out is now a Head
or Wife/"Wife", income information is better gotten from the
new PSID family's family-level data, anyway.

Type: Num Width: 4 Decimals: 2 Location: 87-90

Income and Hours Proration Factor for Second Reported Job

The proration factor compares the months in which an OFUM received a
particular type of income with the months in which that individual
lived in the family. This allows determination of the correct fraction
of income earned by the OFUM while actually an FU member. An OFUM who
lived in the FU for the whole year would have a proration factor of
1.00; one who moved out in January 1992, or who did not have this type
of income, would have a proration factor of 0.00.
