  I. Introduction
In 1990, a supplement concerning the health of elderly Heads and Wives/"Wives" of PSID families was added to the PSID questionnaire and conducted by the study. Dr. Lee Lillard at the RAND Corporation designed the supplement with funding from the National Institute on Aging. As part of the supplement, we asked permission from respondents to request their Medicare records from the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA). Medicare identification numbers were collected from willing respondents. These identification numbers were then submitted to HCFA to obtain Medicare Automated Data Retrieval System (MADRS) claims filed by the respondents in 1990. MADRS data are available from 1984 to 1991.

This file is available only through special contractual arrangement. It contains data constructed from the participating respondents' Medicare claims as reported in the MADRS, as well as identification numbers needed to link these data to the PSID main data files. The data were initially processed by staff at the RAND Corporation and converted to ASCII format by the PSID staff. There are 4 data files. SAS and SPSS data definition statements have been prepared for each data file.

  II. Data Files
This dataset consists of a Person Calendar Year file and three person-episode files: Home Health, Inpatient, and SNF/Swing Bed. The Person Calendar file contains a record for every year that a respondent has any Medicare claims. In this file, the maximum number of records for a given respondent is 10.

In each of the three episode files (Home Health, Inpatient, and SNF/Swing Bed) there is one record for each person-episode, and at least one record for each person who provided a valid Medicare ID. The variable EPISDATA indicates whether a record contains episode data or not.

  III. SAS and SPSS Files
These files contain SAS and SPSS statements providing information about the variables in the data files. The two files of each type, SAS and SPSS, correspond to the data files provided and are named accordingly. Therefore, "mifinal.SAS" contains SAS statements for the mifinal.DAT file; and "mifinal.SPS" contains SPSS statements for the mifinal.DAT file. These statements provide variable names and locations, variable labels and missing data codes.

The SAS and SPSS statements are not intended to represent completed and full programs for the respective statistical program packages to run extracts, analysis, and so on. You must provide all other SAS or SPSS statements needed to complete a program.
