01-SEP-06 New Data Center

Release of a new and improved PSID - CDS Data Center.

Two exciting new capabilities include a Cross-Year Variable Index allowing searching across all 48,000 variables and 34 waves of PSID data and 2 waves of Child Development Supplement data. Searches may be conducted by Topical Domain, by Year, by File, and by Archived Data Carts. During these searches, codebook information may be simultaneously accessed, and data downloaded into a data cart with a click of the mouse. http://simba.isr.umich.edu

In addition, a new software tool has been developed to facilitate the creation of data extracts for generational research. These extracts make it easier to link PSID and/or CDS data on a target individual to the PSID and/or CDS data on their parents, grandparents, and siblings across all waves.
This tool is called the Family Identification and Mapping System (FIMS) and may be accessed here: http://simba.isr.umich.edu/FIMS

PSID is now requiring users to register prior to downloading data in order to impart our Conditions of Use. Registration is very easy, and is required only once. Once registered, return trips can be made using a login and password.

02-AUG-04 The second wave of the Child Development Supplement (CDS-II) data are now available

The CDS-II data are now available through the PSID-CDS Data Center.

We have released the following files: PCG Child, PCG Household, OCG Child, OCG Household, Child Interview, Assessments, Teacher Interview, and Demographic file, based on data collected on 2,907 CDS children/youth aged 5-18 in the fall of 2002/ spring of 2003. These same children were interviewed in 1997 when they were 0-12 for CDS-I, also available through the PSID-CDS Data Center. Each data file is accompanied by a complete on-line codebook. In the Data Center, a map of the caregiver"s PSID IDs now accompanies all CDS downloads. This map can be used to link PSID main study individual data about the caregivers with the CDS data. See the CDS web pages for questionnaires and other study documentation. A User Guide for CDS II will be available around Labor Day 2004; Time Diary data are planned for release in the early fall of 2004.

09-NOV-01 Data Center subsetting tutorial (with Excel option)

Recently we have added dBase as an output option for Data Center files that can easily be imported into Microsoft Excel. Also, the subsetting capacity has been improved. We have made available a tutorial on how to use the Data Center to produce dBase files that can be read into an Excel file and then processed and analyzed in Excel. Now, we are making available such an example in the belief that Excel users can see from the spreadsheet the processing steps.

The Excel file was for 1999 [5232 observations*] and took 14 Data Center PRI [Excel columns A-N] (family and individual) variables (labeled on the spreadsheet) to calculate [Excel columns O-AK] weighted (normalizing the individual weight to 1.000 and excluding those cases with no individual weight) housework hours of men (heads) and women (wives plus female heads). Then average housework hours of married men and married women (and by number of children living in the family) were calculated [S5234-5235 - AK5234-5235].

By clicking on the cells one can see the logical and calculation steps used in Excel. This full tutorial became available by December of 2001.
