June 12-16, 2023
This five-day workshop will orient participants to the content and structure of the core PSID interview,
its special topics modules, and its supplemental studies, including the Child Development Supplement (CDS),
the Transition into Adulthood Supplement (TAS), and the 2013 Rosters and Transfers Module. In addition
we will discuss topics including the recently-released genomics data collected from children and primary
caregivers in CDS as well as new data files which explain family relationships and demographic
characteristics over time.
Activities will be divided between lecture sessions, discussions, and hands-on labs, allowing ample time
for breaks. Lecture sessions will cover topics such as study design, changes to content and sample
composition over time, rules for following sample members into new households, and weighting.
Classroom lab sessions using PSID data extracts will illustrate key concepts and participants
will develop their own analytic data files under the guidance of project staff.

PSID held an Informational Workshop at the American Sociological Association Annual Meeting (Seattle, WA)

This interactive workshop was geared toward current and prospective
users of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID, psid.org), the world’s longest longitudinal household
panel survey. It provided an overview of the general design and content of PSID and its supplemental surveys.
The second half of the workshop included a detailed walk-through of the PSID website, documentation, and data
center as well as a question-and-answer session related to participant- specific inquiries. The PSID has
collected data on a wide range of sociologically relevant topics from a nationally representative sample of
US families and their descendants since 1968. Content domains include employment, occupations, income, wealth,
education, expenditures, health, aging, marriage, childbearing, child development, youth transitions,
philanthropy, intergenerational relations, and numerous other topics.

A PSID Data User Workshop
was held through the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research’s (ICPSR) Summer Program in
Quantitative Methods of Social Research, in Ann Arbor, June 13-17, 2016. The goals of the workshop were to orient
participants to the content and structure of the core PSID interview and its supplemental studies. PSID project
staff provided instruction to the 25 participants who included graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, faculty,
and research professionals. A second workshop will be held through ICPSR in Ann Arbor during the summer of 2017.
These workshops are sponsored by the Eunice Kennedy Shiver National Institute on Child Health and Human Development.

Panel Study of Income Dynamics Workshop for New and Prospective Users

The Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) offered a pre-conference workshop at the 2016 Population
Association of America meeting in Washington, DC. The event was free to registered meeting attendees.
The interactive workshop provided an overview of PSID, highlighted the structure and content of the main
interview, its supplemental surveys including the 1997-2008 Child Development Supplement, the Transition into
Adulthood Supplement, and the Disability and Use of Time Supplement, and data collection
efforts such as the Rosters and Transfers Module, the Childhood Retrospective Circumstances Study, the Adult
Well-Being Study, the 2014 Child Development Supplement, and a new immigrant refresher that was fielded in 2017.
The second half of the workshop offered a walk-through of the PSID website, documentation, and data center.

Conference on Spatial Distribution of Family Members Across the Life Course
- The Panel Study of Income Dynamics and the Health and Retirement Study, with support from the National Institute
on Aging, held a conference at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, featuring research based on the newly
available geospatial data from these two panel studies. Data on location and distances between family members are
available in both studies and can be used to examine a wide array of issues. The goals of the workshop are to stimulate
research using these new data and to learn from researchers ways in which such data can be made more accessible to
the research community.

The Centre for Longitudinal Studies (CLS) at the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), University of London,
hosted the International Conference on Child Cohort Studies, September 12-14, 2006 at Catherine's College, Oxford, England.
The objective of the conference was to promote communication and comparison between those designing, conducting and analyzing
large-scale birth cohort studies in different countries that began around the turn of the new millennium. Tina Mainieri
presented information about the Child Development Supplement to the PSID.
